Renewproof

UK subscription rules, handled inside Stripe.

From 1 January 2027, every business with UK subscribers owes them reminders, cooling-off notices and cancellation confirmations on a statutory schedule. 56 days to go. Renewproof reads your Stripe subscriptions and sends each notice on time, with proof it went out.

One UK subscriber, one year

Monthly plans need a reminder roughly every six months, not every month.

What UK subscribers are owed from 1 January 2027

The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 and the draft Consumer Subscription Contracts Regulations 2026 set six duties that run on dates, not on good intentions.

Renewal reminders
Before the renewal payment that closes each six-month period, and before every annual renewal, with ten required details including the deadline to cancel.
DMCCA s.258–259, Sch.23 Pt 3
Trial and discount endings
A reminder before the first charge after a free trial or the first higher price after a discount.
DMCCA s.258(3)
Early reminder for long terms
A second, earlier reminder when the next charge is more than twelve months away.
DMCCA s.259(6)–(8)
Renewal cooling-off notice
After a trial converts or an annual plan renews, a separate notice of the new 14-day right to cancel.
DMCCA s.265–266
End-of-contract confirmation
Within 24 hours when a customer cancels online, stating the end date.
DMCCA s.261
Proportionate refunds
If a customer cancels in a cooling-off period, refund what was not used, within 14 days, to the same card.
SCRs 2026 regs 19–21

Questions founders ask

We are a US company. Do the UK rules apply to us?

Yes, if you sell auto-renewing subscriptions to consumers in the UK. The draft government guidance says traders based outside the UK who sell to UK consumers need to comply (Guidance FAQ 9).

Do existing subscribers count?

No. The rules cover subscription contracts entered into on or after the start date, planned for 1 January 2027 (draft regulations, reg 2). Renewproof only schedules notices for UK subscriptions that start on or after that date.

Stripe already emails customers before trials end. Is that enough?

Stripe sends a trial reminder at a fixed 7 days and a general renewal reminder. It does not send the six-monthly reminders, the early reminder for annual plans, renewal cooling-off notices or end-of-contract confirmations, and it does not keep a durable evidence log or calculate proportionate refunds.

How many days before a renewal do reminders go out?

The law does not fix a number of days. You state a window in your sign-up information and it must give customers a reasonable chance to cancel. Renewproof sends every reminder inside the window you set and records when it was sent.

What happens if a reminder is missed?

The customer can cancel and claim back payments from the renewal that should have been reminded, for up to 12 months (draft regulations, regs 23–24). The regulator can also fine up to £300,000 or 10% of global turnover, whichever is higher. Renewproof reconciles every day what should have gone out against what did.

Is this legal advice?

No. Renewproof is software that sends the notices and keeps the records the rules describe. For questions about your contracts, speak to a UK consumer lawyer.

What customer data do you keep?

Only what is needed to send notices. Email addresses are used for sending; the evidence log stores a one-way hash. Data is deleted when you remove the app.

Is the law final?

The regulations were laid before Parliament on 19 October 2026 in draft and need approval by both Houses. We track the status and update the rules engine and this site when anything changes. Last checked 5 Nov 2026.
